With Shelford Rugby Club unable to field a side, Cantabs have no opponents for the Cambridgeshire Senior Cup Final at Newmarket, which was due to have been played on May 2nd.
This latest news follows on from the inability of the City's other National League Club, Cambridge, to fulfil their fixture against Cantabs in the semi-final of the same competition.
Frankly, the decisions of both Shelford and Cambridge not to play Cantabs makes us wonder whether we should really have been playing their 1st XVs. The fact that two National League clubs have no credible Development squads able to go up against our 1st XV, puts into doubt the rationale of running youth and colts teams. Surely a realistic youth policy should be developing players for a club's 1st XV.
For the game against Cambridge we had stocked our bar for what was supposed to be the last home game of the season. It is just bad form to let down our Club in that manner.
It is little wonder that Cantabs continues to attract young players; when both Cambridge and Shelford offer few opportunities for competitive senior rugby. Those lads that have joined us in numbers this season are now enjoying regular rugby and an active social calendar for their annual subscriptions.
Cantabs 2nd XV will still be performing at Newmarket in the Intermediate Plate Final against March. Kick - off is at 15.00.
